Go figure.

Thumbing through a ‘what to do’ weekend insert in the Fort Myers newspaper, I came across an ad that caught my attention. It was for a country club in Naples, Florida that was featuring an ‘open to the public’ invitation to share in their restaurant’s Thursday evening buffet for $24.95. The ad also specified that ‘proper attire is required in the dining room’. Fair enough, I thought. If I’m paying 25 dollars to eat, I don’t want to have to look at some jackleg in a wife beater undershirt and pajama bottoms while enjoying my Sundae from the Ice Cream bar.
However, the $24.95 price stopped me from considering it any further and luckily so because a small print line under the ‘proper attire’ warned that ‘blue jeans, cargo shorts and tee shirts’ would not be allowed. That covers about every piece of clothing I own. Funny they didn’t mention my Crocs, maybe they’re okay.
I understood the blue jeans; the nuns warned us many years ago about the little rivets scratching the desks so I suppose the managers of the country club would be concerned about their dining room furniture.
But I didn’t understand the prohibition against cargo shorts. I think they are considered proper dress in this part of the country.
When I pointed this out to my wife, Susie, she said: “Cargo shorts are not proper dress, they make you look sloppy.”
“They do not.” I retorted.
“Yes, they do. You just don’t know it and besides, the managers of that place are probably afraid that people would fill up the pockets of their shorts with food off the buffet.”
Come to think of it, they would be right to worry. A couple of dinner rolls would fit nicely, as long as you hadn’t already buttered them. Not that I would ever do anything like that – butter or no butter-.

I live not very far from Naples. I would pay to see you walk into the country club in cargo shorts and crocs, that would be hilarious.
