The best part of volunteering.

April 28, 2008

Susie and I as well as our friends and fellow tram drivers Bob and Deborah made friends with two young people, brother and sister and also twins.  Darlene and Ivan  are ten years old and are budding naturalists who have spent a lot of weekends in the refuge learning about natiure in all its naturalness.

These two represent the future of this part of the country. They’re smart, polite, bilingual and interested in learning. We will miss them.

Now let me see if I understand this.

It appears to me like the notorious ’speculator’ genre ran the housing market into the ground while practically bankrupting the nation and now they have turned their attention to the commodities market.

It appears like their efforts are working. People in some countries are starving because of rising commodity prices and now Costco and Sam’s Club are rationing rice in this country.

Is anybody watching these people?

Susie scores.

Susie has been wanting to see a bobcat since we showed up at Santa Ana. A few evenings ago, we went for a walk in the refuge with our friends and fellow tram drivers Bob and Deborah Miller from North Carolina.

We had not went far when there he (or maybe she) was.

Deborah had her camera at the ready and snapped this picture. The cat stared at us for a few seconds and then trotted off unhurriedly into the bush.

and speaking of lawyers…

Last night, I watched Boston Legal, a show that last season was one of my favorites. This season, howver, it has turned into nothing more than being a mouthpiece for a liberal political agenda. Last night’s attack on the Supreme Court was the end of it for me.

I’m not looking for political viewpoints from  television theatre. I want mindless entertainment.

I wonder if Hank Hill is still selling propane over there on Fox.

I know where I’m putting my valuables.

a storage container……… These guys are so tricky. I would never have thought to look there.

.

I wonder if lawyers ever watch ‘Cheers’.

April 23, 2008

South Texas is Nirvana for civil lawsuits. There are a lot of reason why but I won’t go into them. Everything that I write down makes me sound either elitist or racist so I will just tell you that the airwaves are full of advertisements for lawyers who will ‘get you the money you deserve. (italics are mine and the emphasis is always on the deserve part.)

One lawyer, Brian Loncar, even advertsies himself as the ‘Strongarm’ who will muscle the auto insurance industry into awarding you a large settlement.  (I assume he specializes in auto accidents) The commercial runs so often I am surprised my TV has survived because every time I see it, I want to throw my shoe at the screen.

Now a new advertisement for a law firm is looking for workers who handled pipe for the pipeline industry. It’s possible theat they may have been exposed to ‘naturally occurring radioactive materials’ and will, of course, be entitled to a settlement.

The advertisement says (and I’m paraphrasing because I don’t remember the Exact wording)
“If you are a pipeline worker, you may have been exposed to NORM.  please contact …..”

What’s going to happen if Woody, Carla  or Cliff Clavin gets wind of this?

It’s just a mockingbird.

Susie running around with her Camera.

It’s a common bird but it was such a great picture.

Okay. I give up.

Just exactly what are they measuring?

They must have been hungry.

Yesterday, my neighbor here in the campground told of seeing an injured, poisonous coral snake in the road next to our campground. Today, Susie went looking and took this picture.

The red ants in the area cleaned this guy up.

Everyday here in the Rio Grande valley, it seems, we come across another bird We have not seen before.  A couple of days ago, we came across one of the strangest we have ever seen.

This is not a stick laying in the brush. It is a bird called a Paraque sitting on a nest with two eggs. The bird is pretty common here in the valley but we had not seen one. One of the other tram drivers found this one out in the Santa Ana wildlife refuge.  Even after it had been pointed out to me, I couldn’t see that it was a bird.

The bird has been on the nest for over a week now and as far as I can tell, has not moved. Nature never ceases to amaze me.
